Hank and Lucy

Dear dear Santa Claus,

We are both new here at the farm.  It was just one of those things, just one of those crazy things, a trip to the moon, on gossamer wings….

Oh, sorry, we are so in love sometimes we forget to talk to other people. We’re both city chickens.  Lucy came from Washington, DC and Hank came from Baltimore.  Maybe that’s why we click!  Right now we are the only chickens on the farm, but that’s partly due to housing.  We have a very nice “chicken pen” where we go to sleep at night.  It’s good, but it’s really not big enough for many more and it’s definitely not good for long-term stays. Santa, can we give you a zoology lesson?  In March and April, our local foxes (who, don’t get me wrong, are VERY cute) have their babies, called “kits”. They are also very cute. Here’s the thing: foxes and chickens have an ancient dance. Foxes chase, chickens flee.  Sometimes foxes eat chickens, especially when they are nursing mamas.  We, as a loving couple, can completely understand the desire of a fox family to feed their young. However, we prefer not to be their meal.

So … we have long wanted a nice big pen with both an outdoor grazing area and a protected area. With this setup and more space, we could invite more chickens to come live with us. There is a HUGE need for chicken homes.  We have investigated many chicken homes for security and stability.  We have seen this model in person and find it to be excellent!  https://blackbearshed.com/shop/coops/combo/deluxe-combination-coop

Yes, it is a bit pricey.  But think of our lives, and think of the lives it will save in the future!  Yes, we mostly roam around the farm free during daylight hours, but NOT in fox kit season. And that can last 2 months. 2 months is a long time to be cooped up (ha ha pardon the pun) in a small area.  Oh Santa, won’t you find us a chicken lover who would sponsor this amazing chicken coop? (It needs a bit of customization, so your chicken loving donor would need to contact our secretary Farmer Anne about the specifics).

Santa, you already brought the ducks worms and dried shrimp and they are sharing it with us!  Here’s the thing: we don’t have a proper  bin to store these in.  This can be ordered through Tractor Supply (we can pick up at the Poolesville store) http://tinyurl.com/tin-for-worms

Santa, we have a problem: some people don’t like me, Hank.  I am a rooster. Some roosters are more protective than others. And I am protective – but NOT mean.  I am just very misunderstood.  My body language is misunderstood and humans need to understand body language of animals.  AND since this is a sanctuary for animals, we think that the humans need to get better educated about how to talk with us – especially me.  Please send us this book that we can share with people who are unjustly afraid of roosters: https://store.grit.com/products/the-chicken-keepers-problem-solver

Dear Santa,  thank you for being here for all of the creatures of the earth. And please send someone to sponsor us!  https://shop.stargazingfarm.org/product/sponsor-hank-and-lucy/
